NHRA ORANGE COUNTY

COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS

2009-2010

PURPOSE

To create Community Outreach opportunities for NHRA Orange County members to contribute their human resources expertise, time and personal donations, along with up to $7,000 of NHRA funds in support of Community Outreach projects.

GOAL / GUIDLEINES

All Community Outreach programs must support assisting people to develop their skills, knowledge, attitude or ability to get employed, stay employed and/or for personal development.

1) Strategic Long-term Partnerships*: To support 2-4 main charities / organizations for partnership and consistency determined by the board.

2) Yearly Partnerships: On a yearly basis, determine other charities (new or old from previous years) that can be voted on based on NHRA’s budget, current membership trends, feedback from the members, etc.

2008-09 Results

  • Improve application/expectations process
  • Donate $8000 to four non-profits
  • Support same non-profits as last year to create partnerships and impact
  • Continuously look for creative ways for non-profits to improve programs from previous year
  • Increase communications / marketing

WORKING WARDROBES* - February

MISSION: To continue helping clients get back to work. Working Wardrobes is building a Job Seekers’ Center, staffed by a Job Developer, to provide job leads and job search information to the 3,000+ clients served each year. The Center will have a bank of computers and a networked printer, and a separate DSL line to access job search sites.

  • Last Year: Retail Training for 4 people
  • This Year: $1,750 Donation to buy 2 new computers and software
  • Spotlight: Conduct Recruit 5 volunteers for various events / to teach workshops
  • Recruit and train 20 Success Coaches for Day of Self-Esteem workshops for men and women

**Working Wardrobes will be joining us for the community relations spotlight
at our February 16, 2010 meeting. Their organization helps men and women in crises re-enter the workforce with wardrobing and career development.

**Working Wardrobes will be ACCEPTING DONATIONS February 16, 2010, of women's and men's suits, shoes, belts, purses, etc. This March is their Cinderellas for Life event. They serve 500 teenage girls from low income families. Working Wardrobes is accepting party dresses, prom dresses, bridesmaids dresses, and any accessories to go with them. Please bring your garments clean and on hangers to our February meeting.

VITAL LINK – April

MISSION: Vital Link’s mission is to create the link between business and education to prepare students for the successful transition to meaningful employment.

  • Last Year: Support 10-20 Career Exploration event volunteers and $1,500 donation will provide 1,500 Pocket Portfolios to OC students
  • This Year: Spotlight: Recruit committee volunteers to support the development of Vital Link’s expanding program base
  • Monetary Grant: $1,750 donation will provide 1,750 Pocket Portfolios to OC students, ROP programs, California Green Job Corps, and non-profit youth organizations.

PROJECT ACCESS* – July

MISSION: To assist low-income families and seniors of affordable housing achieve self-sufficiency through access to onsite education, health, and social services.

  • Last Year: $2,500 donation to buy 2 new computers for their new Santa Ana facility.
  • This Year: $1,750 donation to buy 2 new computers.

New Applicant: TALLER SAN JOSE – August

MISSION: Taller San Jose recruits undereducated, unskilled and unemployed young people (ages 18-28) from Santa Ana and Central Orange County and seeks to walk them out of poverty through job training that offers the hope of a productive and self-reliant future. Taller San Jose is a highly focused, goal oriented program that helps students develop into self-reliant adults through three training academies in Office Careers, Construction and Medical Careers, as well as support services that include mentoring and counseling, legal assistance, substance abuse case management and free of charge job placement.
